Multicell is a building that takes more than one space. (Imagine that!)
The following buildings are multi-cell:
-Barracks
-Stables
-Workshops
It works by "merging" 4 squares together.
In order to do so you must build a single building and upgrade it, after upgrading to level 3 level 4 requires that you have buildings surrounding it to upgrade to level 4 and take up 4 boxes.
In this table the top left barracks is your level 3 Barracks. And the surrounding barracks are level 1. The X's represent other barracks that will come later.

When your upgrade is done your 3 level 1 barracks will be "eaten" and taken place by a nice looking barracks (Sometime I should get the images...) like in this table.

Must you really need an example?

Turns into this...

Now. This is just a guess "BUT" I would assume, so that the game creator could make the buildings have better looks to them, and to give much more detail, he created this system.
Honestly, this is another guess... BUT, it is the BEST way to ensure that the places that are overtaken by the next level of the "Multicell building" are not buildings that are important, of course you "could" make 9 level 3 buildings, but you wouldn't get much out of them now would you?
